She is also known for her performance in the theatre, particularly in her leading roles as Emmie Thibodeaux and as Emmie in The Broadway show Caroline or Change (2004) in which she was awarded the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and Beneatha Younger in The Broadway adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun (2014) in which she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured actor in a Musical.
